Abstract
With the constant evolution of information and communication technologies (ICT), it is important to continue to contribute to digital inclusion.
MUDA (Movement for a Universal and Digitally Active citizenship), was launched in Portugal in 2017, with the objective of contributing to a more advanced, inclusive and participative country. MUDA aims to reduce the number of citizens who have never accessed the internet and to increase the number of citizens with advanced digital skills. MUDA also means CHANGE in Portuguese.
The project MUDA NA ESCOLA (“Change at School”) was launched by MUDA and was designed to promote the digital inclusion of adults who never used the internet, with a special emphasis on elderly adults.
The project has 3 main objectives:
• Reduce the number of Portuguese who have never used the internet.
• Help all Portuguese citizens become more digitally literate.
• Encourage student volunteers to be relevant actors in this endeavor and contribute for an inclusive society.
To accomplish these objectives, the MUDA NA ESCOLA established an educational methodology and partnership system that offers a network of digital inclusion centers in high schools – using students to teach elderly people.
This project utilizes a demonstrative intervention model (“learning by doing”) based on “training sessions” lasting two hours where instruction is face-to-face and one-to-one. The classes are free and occur across a network of partner high schools that support the project by providing:
• Volunteer professor/s that serve as local program coordinator for each school;
• A classroom or structured area (equipped with computers) where session can occur;
• Volunteer students who participate as instructors.
The project provides high schools with an educational platform (educational digital content with 8 digital guidebooks) and training materials as well as free management support of the contact center for registration of elderly adults.
