A coding academy for refugees

Abstract

Powercoders is a coding academy for refugees. It was funded in 2017 by Christian Hirsig, a Swiss tech entrepreneur. Powercoders aims to have a positive impact on the lives of refugees in Europe by teaching them how to code and them connecting them to IT industies. Powercoders offers a 3-months intensive coding bootcamp where participants learn the main programming languages (HTML, CSS and Javascript) and then have access to paid internships in the IT sector. Together with hard skills, Powercoders organises a program for the development of soft skills, fundamental to have a successful professional career. So far, Powercoders has trained more than 200 refugees across Switzerland (Lausanne and Zurich) and Italy (Milan and Turin), 90% of whom have started an internship and more than 60% of them is now working in the IT sector.
